Clément Montolio
The work of Clément Montolio is based on the question of the motive and on the progressive constitution by successive coverings of forms which evolve from a session to the other one.
It is very often about landscapes, rarely humanized, seeming frequently abandoned or ghostly. Simplified architectural structures or complex and uninhabitable constructions become integrated into the landscape marked by split between green and bluish patches.
The memory is widely put in contribution in this work of successive covering. An exactly drawn motive faints under other layers and can be reactivated.
- Some motives, like huts that Clément Montolio often paints send back at the same time to bibliographic details of the artist or the spectator. It may refer to question of the isolation, the withdraw from society or to one of the most primitive structures of house or protection. As such, Clément Montolio's work is often articulated around this double perception of the motive : a balance between the iconic and universal value of a subject and the precise and recognizable representations attached to a specific moment in someone’s life.
